The Grange, Hellifield
We are grateful to John Pearcy for adding the following information: This house was built for the curate in charge of Hellifield when the church was still in the Institute. The house proved too large to maintain on a curate’s salary so was sold to a Mr. Grundy, who renamed it ‘The Grange’. Mr. Grundy came from Grange over Sands, where his family owned The Grange Hotel. My grandfather was employed to look after the gardens when he was discharged from the army in 1921, after losing his right leg during the First World War.
