Contributor - John Pearcy
John Pearcy is a major contributor to the Hellifield Herald. He writes stories about the history of the village.
John’s family roots in Hellifield go back to the early 1880s when his great grandparents came to live in Midland Terrace, my grandmother being born there in 1895.
His paternal grandfather came to Hellifield before the first world war to work in the gardens at the Peel, his father following in his footsteps in the 1930s. After service in world war two, his father worked on the railway for over 20 years where he met John’s mother (who worked on the station at Newsholme). John’s family home was in one of the small cottages on Gisburn road (also known as Bacon Terrace). He was educated at Hellifield primary school and Settle High School. On leaving school he was employed at the Dewhurst’s Sylko Mill in Skipton, until its closure. He then moving to Johnson and Johnson Medical at Gargrave, where he stayed for forty years until retirement.
John still lives in Hellifield.
