NORTH CRAVEN WILLS AND INVENTORIES
The transcription of wills and inventories from copies held at a variety of regional
Record Offices, The National Archives and the Borthwick Institute for Archives at
York University has been undertaken by volunteers. A date of 1750 was initially set to
limit the extent of the work to wills proved at York.
The set to 1750 for Giggleswick Ancient Parish has been completed. The Ancient Parish
includes the modern parishes of Giggleswick, Langcliffe, Rathmell, Settle and
Stainforth.
The set for Ingleton has been completed and published in book form, i.e. ‘Voices
from the past, 1548 to 1700’, and ‘Inventories and Wills from the Parish of Ingleton
1700-1750’ by Carol Howard and Sheila Gordon with members of Ingleborough
Archaeology Group, in 2015 and 2016.
The set for Clapham parish is complete up to 1603 followed by many wills proved at York up to 1858.
The set for Horton in Ribblesdale is complete to 1603 and followed by many wills proved at York up to 1750.
In later years of this project the wills proved at the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, held in London, became more economically available via the Ancestry.com website (requiring a subscription) at a cost lower than the TNA source. These PCC wills range from 1384 to 1858. The copies of these wills in the Register Books have been transcribed for the Ancient Parish of Giggleswick (1644-1857) and for the Ancient Parish of Clapham (1653-1857). For wealthier people they were often registered first in York and then copied and proved at London, but for all people during the Commonwealth period in the 1650s they were proved at London. These have been transcribed by Mary and Michael Slater.
