Settle Court Rolls
A large number of Elizabethan Court Records for Settle were photographed by Roy Price and translated and transcribed by Brooke Westcott some years ago, all at Roy’s expense. The originals are held at Chatsworth House, catalogue series L/45/11.
As a result of illness, Roy Price has donated all his work to the North Craven Heritage Trust requesting that the material is made publically available. The NCHT in turn are copying these transcribed court rolls to the Capturing the Past website.
The collection comprises the following court records (in book form) as well as later documents.
1547 to 1553 Edward VI
1553 to 1558 Mary and Philip
(1558 to 1577 not extant )
1578 to 1603 Elizabeth I
1603 to 1605 James I
In some of the Elizabethan transcriptions the numbers in [ ] it is believed are Price photograph numbers (photographs now lost). It is not certain that all text has been transcribed in some of these particular documents so if there is any doubt, the originals would have to be consulted.
A new set of photographs was commissioned in 2018 (for 1547-1558). The lists of tenants were then translated/transcribed by M. J. Slater, but not the remainder of the court proceedings.
In 2020 the full set of records for Edward VI (1547 to 1553) was translated by Simon Neal financed by a grant from the North Craven Heritage Trust. The image 990 included with image 989 (May 1553) is provided in its Latin version as well as the translation, to help future efforts in translation by others.
In 2021 the full set of records for Mary Tudor then Mary with Philip II of Spain (1553 to 1558) was translated by Simon Neal financed by a further grant from the North Craven Heritage Trust. The image 986 is provided in its Latin version as well as the translation.
There are still therefore gaps in the collection and only partial translation. Nevertheless, a clearer picture is emerging of life in those times. No claim for completeness or accuracy can be made at this time. It is hoped that the lists of names will be of genealogical value.
