  • The photo is taken at Dry Howe, Selside, Near Kendal.

My brother thinks some of the men on the photo are starting on the rhs man seated with sears in his hand – Jack Dixon, Teddy Woods, William Dargue, Fred Nevinson. Not sure the man stood clipping or the one with his bottom towards us or the two men holding and marking the sheep.

My brother said that our Father had to alter the shippon window to make it bigger (from the one shown) as it was a requirement for when he wanted to milk cows, they had to have more light. My Mother and Father went to Dry Howe in the early 1950’s.

My brother thinks the photo is probably from the 1940s.

The iron which is being used to mark the sheep (and which I recognised and confirmed to me that it is Dry Howe) is still being used by my brother today as the flock mark for his sheep.

Also if you look of the Joseph Hardman collection from the Abbot Hall website there are photos of Teddy Woods holding a fleece in front of the shippon door with the sheep it was from next to him. Mr Woods appears to be wearing the same cap and jumper. I will try and look later and give you a reference if I have time.

My Mother and Father took the farm over from Mr Woods.

    Hope this helps.
    Kind regards
