Bolton Abbey: The Great Tythe Barn, NGR SE07255383. Listed GdII* early C16
Most of the following 16 images of the Great Tythe Barn are of the interior, specifically the roof trusses. Armstrong added truss identification numbers to many of the slides in pencil at a later date some of which have been altered. The Yorkshire Vernacular Building Study Group (YVBSG), of which Armstrong was an active member, carried out a detailed study of this barn in 2004. They numbered the trusses of the north section of the barn T1N-T6N and the south section trusses T1S-T4S, both from N-S. It is these numbers that appear on the Armstrong Collection slide mounts. YVBSG were instrumental in pressing for the trusses to be tree-ring dated and an initial 17 samples were taken and dated in 2005. An additional 26 samples were taken in 2014. The Historic England report of the tree-ring analysis uses the YVBSG elevation and plan drawings attributed to Armstrong & Pacey with their truss numbering system.
Since these photographs were taken, most of the internal stone partition walls have been removed and the barn developed as a magnificent wedding venue.
