This collection has arisen from a variety of sources, but most are held as memoranda at the West Yorkshire Archive Service, Wakefield, West Yorkshire History Centre. Regional Record Offices, Skipton Library and The National Archives have provided many documents. Others are from original deeds in private hands. Transcriptions have been made by various people, for which we are grateful. Sheila Gordon has transcribed over 1300 of the West Yorkshire History Centre deeds. The deeds for Settle, Giggleswick and Stainforth span the period 1704-1850. A search was made in the Place Names Indexes for 1704-1786. However, for the following years the Indexes are arranged in surname order only, requiring the name of an owner. There are frequently multiple owners so a thorough search was not feasible: the transcripts for this later period are therefore not complete. Access to deeds is now somewhat restricted, making the task more difficult than it used to be.
