Long Preston Alms Houses
There is an excellent Charity Hospital on the Gisburn Road, a little to the South of the village, which was founded by the will, dated 17th March 1615 of James Knowles, a London mercer of Wandon’s Green and a native of Long Preston. It is for ten poor persons, men or women, who must be Natives of the Parish and who are elected for life by the governors of this charity. The houses were rebuilt in 1858. The original endowment consisted of land worth in 1786, £49 15s and in 1886, £285 per annum. The ten inmates now receive 6/- a week each.
